The continued existence of life on earth depends on organisms copying their genetic material accurately. Even the most basic organisms have evolved sophisticated mechanisms to ensure genetic code is duplicated with a high degree of fidelity. However, errors do still slip through, leading to mutations.

Scientists believe that in small measures these mutations can be beneficial to the process of evolution because they introduce genetic variation – one of the key ingredients required for evolution. This is difficult to prove in a laboratory. But can we demonstrate it in silico?
